The diploma

The Government’s White Paper ‘14-19 Education and Skills’ (February 2005) sets out a vision for the future of education for 14 – 19 year olds, at the heart of which is a new system of Specialised Diplomas.

Diplomas in fourteen lines of learning, each corresponding to a key sector of the economy, will become a national entitlement for all students. e-skills UK is working with partners to develop the Diploma in the IT line of learning.

The purpose of the Specialised Diploma

The Diploma will provide an exciting, aspirational and stretching programme of learning, appealing to a wide range of students. This will include the most capable preparing for the most demanding university courses, those planning to enter the workforce directly at 18, and those who are not well engaged with current provision.

The South East Development Agency (SEEDA) is working with e-skills UK to assess the implications of the IT Diploma and to undertake development and pilot activities ahead of general availability. However the findings will also be fed into the national project and will therefore shape the way the IT Diploma is delivered across England.
